Our optometric assistants will carry out a series of important tests and photographs before your appointment with the doctor.
At Summerland optometry, we understand that your vision is important to you. We make sure to schedule adequate time for your appointment, to be able to help you with all your needs.
We take the time to find out how each patient uses their eyes so that we can provide a solution to your specific vision needs whether it’s lenses or therapy. We test for ocular disease, binocular vision anomalies and any potential eye related health problems. We will provide answers and solutions to your needs.
Our exam fees include optos-ultrawide retinal imaging. Additional testing including – OCT scans, visual field testing, corneal topographies or full functional vision assessments – are done if we feel they are warranted.
Once we’ve completed your exam, we will discuss the next steps with you, including updating your prescription if necessary and helping you get new glasses. If you require additional testing or specialist consultations, our team can offer referrals and help you book these additional appointments.
And, as always, if you have any questions or concerns, we take the time to ensure they are thoroughly addressed. We want to ensure that you are confident in your vision.
Regular eye exams allow us to carefully evaluate the overall health and functionality of your eyes. Our comprehensive eye exams include a pressure test for glaucoma, vision testing to determine your optimal eyeglass or contact lens prescription, evaluation of eye movement and focusing ability, as well as an overall eye health assessment. New digital technology, including Optomap wide field retinal imaging and OCT eye scans, allows us to create digital images of the inside of your eye which can be invaluable in diagnosing serious changes in the eye that can occur over time.
It’s more than simply updating your prescription, although we do that too. Often patients believe that their eyes are healthy because they “see well”. Many eye diseases like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration can develop and progress without obvious symptoms. An eye exam is the best, and often only, way to catch and treat eye disease before they go on to cause significant and permanent vision loss. Often systemic disease, such as diabetes and hypertension, can also be detected at your eye examination.
Regular eye examinations are important to your health and wellness, as well as for preventative maintenance when it comes to eye conditions or diseases.
Everyone should have periodic eye examinations. Once you become a patient at our clinic, we will inform you of when you should be returning for your next visit.
Generally, we recommend an eye exam every 1-2 years for adults depending on your age and risk factors. If you’re noticing some unusual symptoms or vision changes, you should be assessed without delay.

The optometrists at Summerland Optometry take a special interest in learning-related vision problems, strabismus and amblyopia and binocular vision disorders in children. We offer comprehensive children’s examinations as well as full functional vision assessments for patients that required a more thorough workup. We expanded the office in 2021 to be able to provide this invaluable service.
Vision is very important for all aspects of your child’s learning and development, which means that if your child is having difficulty seeing clearly and comfortably, his or her learning can be affected. This also goes for infants who develop and learn about the world around them through their sense of sight.
Annual eye exams should be part of growing up. Being proactive and ensuring your child has healthy eyes is one of the best ways to set your child up for success.
Often, when children have visual issues, they may not even realize something is wrong. It is often their ‘normal’ or they don’t know how to communicate the problem. Parents are often unaware that their child might not be using both eyes together and many young children have strain from near focusing.
Your child’s first exam should be at 6 months of age, but for sure by age 3. They should be testing again before they enter kindergarten and annually once they are in school. Kindergarten vision testing is a great screening tool but can miss many eye problems.
Children’s eye exams are partially covered by B.C. Medical Services Plan until they turn 19 years old.
Dr. Kimberley Goods and Dr. Amber Jeannotte have young children so they are accustomed to working with children. Dr Nancy Friessen is also excellent with kids and also holds a Bachelors in Education. We will do our best to ensure your child is comfortable at his/her examination and maybe even have some fun! We go through some games with pictures, 3D glasses and often there is even a movie. We check their acuity and eye teaming; making sure their vision is strong and ready to support their learning.
A learning-related vision problem directly affects how we learn, read and sustain close work. Visual dysfunctions can manifest in ways that are confused with dyslexia, ADHD and other learning disabilities because they affect a child’s ability to focus for reading and school work.
These conditions both affect the ability of the eyes to work together as a team (or “eye teaming”).
Strabismus is when the eyes are misaligned. The affected eye often appears as if it is turned inwards (esotropia) or outwards (exotropia). Strabismus treatment can involve glasses, vision training, prismatic correction and sometimes even require surgery. Uncorrected strabismus usually leads to amblyopia.
Amblyopia or “lazy eye” is a neurological developmental vision problem that occurs during infancy and early childhood. The brain starts ignoring the visual sensory information from one eye (or both), due to either one eye being misaligned or one eye having a significantly different refractive error compared to the other eye. Essentially one eye is always out of focus compared to the other eye and the brain learns over time to ‘turn’ that eye off. Children do not grow out of amblyopia; it requires normally requires glasses and vision therapy.
Myopia, or near-sightedness, occurs when the eyeball is too long or too powerful, resulting in blurred distance vision. Myopia progresses primarily due to elongation of the eyeball which occurs primarily between age 7 to 16. Myopia is on the rise for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to genetics, an increase in near-work demands and a decrease in time spent outdoors.
It is estimated that 28% of the Canadian population is myopic and according to WHO, this figure is expected to grow to 58% by the year 2050. Myopia is also starting at earlier ages and progressing at a faster rate than seen historically.
Most children wear glasses to correct myopia; however, there are many new options to prevent its progression. Myopia control methods can be used when the myopia is progressing at a rapid rate .
Hyperopia, the most common refractive error found in young children, occurs because the eye is too short. A hyperopic child can still see clearly but the vision can become quite strained because they need to focus their eyes excessively. Hyperopic children often have trouble keeping their eyes straight as human eyes naturally converge when they focus. This can lead to an eye turn, or strabismus. It is very important to rule hyperopia at a young age.
Astigmatism is another common refractive error found in children. It occurs when the front surface of the eye is slightly irregular or cylindrical in shape. This prevents the light from focusing properly on the retina, resulting in the vision being blurred or distorted. Glasses are need to correct the astigmatism as uncorrected astigmatism can lead to amblyopia.
If you are a senior, you’ve probably figured out that more things tend to deteriorate as we age, the eyes are no exception.
Senior eye exams are strongly focused on ocular health. Sight threatening eye conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration become much more common with age.
With the excellent technology available, we are able to detect all these conditions at an early stage which generally results in better long-term outcomes. We value preventative optometry and take the time to review everything with you.
Once you’ve reached age 65, you should have your eyes examined annually. This is the best way to detect eye disease at an early stage and maintain optimal eye health.
Cataracts are very common and occur when crystalline lens in the eye start to cloud over. They are usually related to aging, but can also affect you at a much younger age.
Glaucoma is a disease that causes irreversible damage the optic nerve of the eye, resulting in vision loss. It is often asymptomatic in the early stages, and only a comprehensive eye exam can determine if you have or are at risk for developing glaucoma.
Age related macular degeneration is a potentially visually devastating disease which affects your central vision. It is often asymptomatic in the early stages, and only a comprehensive eye exam can determine if you have signs of macular degeneration.
A vitreous detachment is a normal aging process of the eyes, but can lead to retinal tears or retinal detachments. Any new symptoms of flashes or floaters suggest a possible vitreous detachment need to be assessed in a timely manner.
Dry eye and blepharitis can be caused by aging changes to the eyelids and to the glands of the eyelids. It is important to start with therapies at an early stage for optimal results.
I’m interested in contact lenses. What’s next?
A good contact lens fit starts with a thorough eye exam to obtain an up-to-date prescription and rule out any health issues that could interfere with contact lens wear. Measurements of your eyes will be taken to determine the parameters of the contact lenses that are likely to work best for your comfort and vision. Irregular optics or astigmatism in your prescription will be an important consideration in the type of lenses that you can wear.
Based on your prescription and lifestyle, an initial pair of trial lenses will be selected for you to “test drive”.
If you are a new contact lens wearer, you will be booked for a teaching session to explain everything you need to know about contact lenses. In this session you will be taught how to properly insert, remove, and care for your lenses. Once you’ve learned the basics, we’ll send you home with an initial trial pair of lenses.
After a short trial period, you will return to see the doctor to assess the fit and performance of the lenses. At this time your contact lens prescription will be finalized or in some cases different lenses may need to be tried. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find the best contact lenses for you. Once your prescription is finalized you are ready to order. An annual supply is recommended as the most cost-effective option, often with rebates available.

The doctors at the clinic have the training and the required specialized equipment to diagnose and treat most acute eye issues.
